C.W. Post Offers New Two-Track
Advanced Nursing M.S. Degree
The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville is meeting
today's health care challenges by introducing a new two-track Master of
Science degree in Advanced Practice Nursing. The program, in which a student
can qualify to become either a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Family
Nurse Practitioner (FNP), is slated to begin in the Fall 1997 semester.
According to Theodora Grauer, R.N., Ph.D., chair of the Nursing Department,
the new degree is part of C.W. Post's continued commitment to offer educational
opportunities that address changing trends within the health care community.
"Today's nurses are no longer doctor's assistants," she said.
"They're often the first to treat, diagnose and care for a patient
and can deliver as much as eighty percent of the health services, and up
to ninety percent of the pediatric care provided by primary care physicians,
at equal or better quality."
Students in the M.S. program will complete required course work in advanced
pathophysiology, pharmacology, and diagnosis and management. Flexible schedules
will allow students to complete the 46-credit FNP program in six semesters
of part-time study and the 36-credit CNS program in five semesters of part-time
study or three semesters of full-time study. A dynamic core curriculum includes
courses in nursing theory, research, health policy, ethics, and leadership
and management. Graduates of the family nurse practitioner track will be
eligible for New York State certification and graduates of both tracks will
be eligible for certification by the American Nurses Assocation Credentialing
Center.
