C.W. Post Offers Paid Internships for Those Pursuing Teaching
Careers
December 4, 1998 -- In response to the new New York State teaching standards,
the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University
in Brookville has joined forces with several Long Island public school
districts to create paid internships for individuals pursuing their master's
degree in education. The program is open to recent college graduates and
individuals seeking a career change. Participants who hold an undergraduate
degree in English, mathematics, science or social studies can earn a master's
degree and New York State certification in as little as one and one-half
years.
According to Joanne Blas, assistant dean of the School of Education,
individuals in the program will be required to take 15 education credits
before they qualify to student teach in a participating school district.
By the third semester of the program, they will be eligible to participate
in an internship, paid for by the school district. As interns, they will
provide academic support to middle and high school students who either
need help passing Regents exams or who must meet other state standards
for passing their courses.
"Our interns will offer much-needed one-to-one support to those
students requiring extra attention," said Blas. "Coupled with
their student teaching and academic coursework, they will gain the experience
they need to maximize their liberal arts or professional backgrounds as
they prepare to enter the field of education."
Throughout the internship experience, students will receive support
from a C.W. Post faculty member as well as an on-site local school mentor.
The interns will take classes with the same cohort of students and will
be members of an integrated learning community.
Internship participants who meet C.W. Post admissions requirementscan
enroll in courses for the spring and summer 1999 semesters, enabling them
to student teach in the fall of 1999 and participate in the paid internship
program in the spring of 2000. Registration is taking place now and classes
begin on January 19, 1999.
Blas added that recent studies indicate that within the next 10 years,
50% of teachers in New York State will leave the profession due to retirement;
within 20 years, the figure will increase to 70%. "This makes the
teaching profession a very attractive career choice for the new millennium,"
she said.
