David M. Weiss Honored with PEP's Faculty of the Year
Award
PEP 1998 Faculty of the Year Award winner,
Dr. David M. Weiss
December 21, 1998 -- David M. Weiss, Ph.D., a resident of Northport,
NY and a professor of health care administration at the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University in Brookville, NY, was recently honored by the
campus' Professional Experience and Placement (PEP) office with its 1998
Faculty of the Year Award. The award is given annually by PEP as it honors
advocates of its cooperative education program.
Dr. Weiss was chosen for his activities in support of student participation
in PEP's experiential education programs. He has worked closely with PEP
to provide students with career information and job hunting skills. "Dr.
Weiss has always been someone PEP could count on to support our mission
to help students grow professionally through hands-on work experience,"
said Jeanette Grill, director of PEP. "Dr. Weiss's encouragement has
led to numerous placements for his students at some of the top health related
facilities on Long Island and in the New
York metropolitan area, which in turn has also helped his students secure
permanent positions after graduation."
Dr. Weiss has been affiliated with Long Island University for 23 years,
beginning his career at the Brooklyn Campus as an assistant professor of
sociology and anthropology. In 1974 he joined the C.W. Post Campus and
from 1983-85 served as assistant dean in the School of Business & Public
Administration's Department of Public Administration. After serving as
assistant dean from 1983-85, Dr. Weiss became assistant vice president
for academic affairs. He received tenure in 1978 as an assistant professor
in the department of Healthcare and Public Administration and became a
full professor in 1986.
Highly regarded for his expertise in health care and public administration,
Dr. Weiss is published in professional publications and academic journals.
He has served the greater academic community through his lectures, seminars
and presentations on the local and national levels. At C.W. Post, he helped
introduce several new courses and programs in sociology, political science,
and heath and public administration. He is author of National Guide to
Funding in Aging (1989), is a member of the Health and Welfare Council
of Long Island, and has served as consultant to Minority Women's Business
Institute for the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Business Development
Agency. Among his numerous professional associations, Dr. Weiss has served
the American Sociological Association and is a member of several honor
societies. A graduate of Long Island University with a B.A. in psychology
and sociology, Dr. Weiss also holds a master's degree in sociology and
social psychology from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in medical sociology
and health services research from the University of Pittsburgh.
PEP provides paid internship opportunities (called "Co-ops")
for students in every major. Through PEP and Co-op, students can gain hands-on
work experience, build a resume, receive career counseling, and conduct
job searches through an on-line database of thousands of potential employers
nationwide. Over the past five years, PEP has boasted a 99% job placement
