Homecoming 1996 Highlights
Football team wins. Homecoming 1996 saw the C.W. Post football team
come through for an emotional 14-0 win over rival Bentley College in the
rain and wind at Hickox Field. The Pioneers had lost to Bentley in each
of the last two seasons, including once in the 1994 ECAC Intercollegiate
Football Conference Division 11 Bowl Game. The C.W. Post defense held the
Falcons to-8 yards rushing and 68 yards of total offense on the afternoon
to record the thrilling victory.
Soccer scores. Meanwhile,
the men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie neighboring
New York Tech 3-3 in an important New York Collegiate Athletic Conference
contest on Homecoming . The Pioneers trailed 2-0 and 3-1 before coming back
with a pair of goals in the final 25 minutes of regulation to come away
with the tie. The final athletics contest of Homecoming saw Bentley get
some measure of revenge for the football defeat with a 2-1 win in women's
soccer on Sunday. C.W. Post took a 1-0 lead early in the game, but Bentley
tied the score right before the half and tallied the game-winner with just
over 20 minutes to play.

C.W. Post Alumni in Olympics
Former C.W. Post men's basketball players Darrick Heath and Matt Ryan earned
the right to represent the United States in the 1996 Summer Olympics in
Atlanta as members of the national team handball squad. Heath and Ryan were
recruited by the United States Team Handball coach while playing basketball
at C.W. Post. They have developed into two of the top handball players in
the country. Heath finished second on the national team in scoring during
the Olympics with 23 goals, while Ryan, the team captain, scored 12 goals.
Lacrosse Wins National Title
The news was so electrifying that Long Island University President David
Steinberg interrupted an honors ceremony at Commencement Weekend to announce
it: The 1996 C.W. Post men's lacrosse team had won the first national championship
in the young campus's 42-year history. The Pioneers 15-10 defeat of Adelphi
for the Division II title was also the program's first post-season victory
of any kind.
Before this spring, several members of the track and field team had won
individual national championships in specific events, but the closest any
Pioneer team had come to a national title was a runner-up finish (1970 outdoor
track and field, 1981 softball, 1993 men's lacrosse).
