First Major Project
New York Philharmonic Residency Program at Tilles Center with C.W.
Post Orchestra and Gemini Youth Orchestra to begin on Monday, April 12
Philharmonic's Music Director, Kurt Masur, to Address Young
Long Island Musicians
Talented young Long Island musicians from the C.W. Post Orchestra and
the Gemini Youth Orchestra will work with some of the world's best orchestral
artists in a collaborative program of the New York Philharmonic and Tilles
Center. The three-part residency -- including orchestra and sectional
rehearsals and panel discussions at Tilles Center on April 12; an open
New York Philharmonic rehearsal and discussion with Kurt Masur at Avery
Fisher Hall on April 29; and master classes with New York Philharmonic
musicians at Tilles Center on May 1 -- is the first major initiative of
the newly-formed Institute for Arts & Culture at the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University in Brookville.
Elliott Sroka, executive director of Tilles Center and of the Institute,
explained: "The development of young musicians is central to our
mission. Through this exciting collaboration, now in its fourth year of
development, Long Island students will continue to have the opportunity
to make music under the guidance of world-class artists." Sroka explained
that Masur's involvement in this year's residency makes it the most comprehensive
one yet offered to young Long Island musicians.
During the residency program, student musicians will be coached by and
observe the work of world-class artists. The program begins on Monday,
April 12 with four simultaneous sectional rehearsals of the first movement
of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. Working with the student musicians
will be Philharmonic musicians Eileen Moon (strings), Renee Siebert (winds),
Tom Smith (brass) and Joe Pereira (timpani). The April 12 sessions will
include a panel discussion involving these Philharmonic musicians as well
as Polly Kahn, the Philharmonic's Director of Education.
On Thursday, April 29, participating students from the C.W. Post Orchestra
and the Gemini Youth Orchestra will be transported to Avery Fisher Hall
for an open rehearsal of the New York Philharmonic conducted by Masur.
The orchestra will be rehearsing the program they will present at Tilles
Center on Saturday, May 1. Immediately following the rehearsal, Masur will
meet with the students for a discussion.
The residency program continues on the afternoon of May 1 with master
classes at Tilles Center led by the same three New York Philharmonic musicians
who conducted the April 12 sectional rehearsals. That evening, students
will attend the Philharmonic's public performance at Tilles Center. The
evening program includes the world premiere of Gubaidulina's Two Paths,
Concerto for Two Violas; Shubert's Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished); Bach's
Brandenburg Concerto No. 6; and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 (Italian).
Speaking for the New York Philharmonic, which has long been active in
programs which encourage the development of young artists, Director of
Education Polly Kahn said: "We continue to be excited about this
partnership between the New York Philharmonic and Tilles Center which has
benefited so many of Long Island's young musicians."
In recent years, Tilles Center has strengthened its commitment to nurturing
the artists and audiences of tomorrow through activities such as master
classes featuring internationally renowned soloists and ensembles, the
Tilles
Scholars program run in conjunction with the C.W. Post Music Department,
and the expanded arts-in-education Schools Program. Tilles Center Outreach
activities are funded in part by Swing for Kids, the successful annual
golf and tennis tournament which will be held this year on June 28 at The
Creek and The Meadow Brook Club. The C.W. Post Institute for Arts &
Culture was founded by Long Island University as a means to integrate campus
arts and education programs.
