"Should We Stop Immigration?" - April 20th
Lecture
The Institute for Sustainable Development at Long Island University
and the Long Island Center for Ethics at C.W. Post are hosting a symposium
to examine the effects, problems and challenges of a rising immigrant population.
"Should We Stop Immigration" will be held on Tuesday, April 20,
1999 at 3:30 p.m. in the Fishbowl of Hillwood Commons at the C.W. Post
Campus of Long Island University, located on Northern Boulevard (Route
25A) in Brookville.
Facilitated by Dr. Ellen McGee, director of the Long Island Center for
Ethics and a philosophy professor at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University, "Should We Stop Immigration" features some of the
world's foremost experts on immigration and addresses the impact of immigration
on the economy, environment and society as a whole.
The symposium features John Brock, founder, chairman and secretary of
TRIM (Tri-State Immigration Moratorium, Inc.), a corporation for the study
of immigration in the tri-state region. Brock will discuss, not only the
TRIM view that immigration has a negative impact on our society, but also
the proposal by TRIM to reduce immigration from its high current level.
The symposium also features Mike Hoffman of the Workplace Project, a non-profit
organization dedicated to fighting the exploitation of Latino immigrant
workers on Long Island, who will discuss the international dynamics of
immigration and the reasons why industrialized nations must support less
advanced nations through liberal immigration policies. George Klein of
the Sierra Club will also be on hand, discussing the Sierra Club's long-term
debate on immigration and its recent decision to remain neutral amidst
the controversy.
Free and open to the public, the symposium will express not only the
varied views of these organizations but also the societal and ethical issues
surrounding this human issue.
