In keeping with a long-time tradition of excellence, The Pioneer - the student newspaper of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville - has won four Newsday College Journalism Awards for work submitted in the Fall 1998 semester.

The awards were for the following: First Place: Photography went to Massapequa resident Chris Vultaggio, photography editor; First Place: Local News went to "Banfi Vintner" by Lockport, NY resident C.J. Randall, editor-in-chief; Second Place: Commentary went to "Newt-ered" by Middle Island resident Suzanne Deffree, news editor; Second Place: Typography and Layout went to Wayne, N.J. resident Darin E. Gaba, production manager, and Cranford, N.J. resident John M. Leary, managing editor.

Newsday holds its annual College Journalism Awards to honor college, high school and junior high school newspapers on Long Island.

"The Pioneer is made up of students who take on full credit loads and often work outside of school," said Suzanne Deffree, the Pioneer's Spring 1999 editor-in-chief. "We put out quality publications every week and work hard to become an even more active part of C.W. Post, including doubling our on-campus coverage and holding events like our recent career seminar, 'How to Break into Journalism' and our three open houses for incoming and undergraduate students."
