Palmer School Graduates Celebrate Near Perfect
Employment Record for Fourth Straight Year
For the fourth year in a row, graduates of the Palmer School of Library
and Information Science at Long Island University are celebrating a near
perfect employment rate.
According to Mary Westermann-Cicio, assistant dean of the Palmer School,
a recent survey revealed that the average starting salary for the 1998
graduates who earned degrees in library science is $36,061 with 96% of
those graduating finding professional library positions within six months.
Graduates landed jobs in the following sectors:
- Public Libraries -- 32%

- School Media Centers -- 44%
-
- Academic Libraries -- 10%
-
- Special Libraries -- 8%
-
- Other (Information Industry, Archives, etc.) -- 6%
Most graduates (95%) are based in New York, with the remaining graduates
employed in nearby New Jersey or as distant as California. All graduates
found permanent, professional library positions, with the exception of
three, who are not employed but are actively seeking positions. Of those
employed in professional positions, the average time for employment was
1.3 months.
The Palmer School offers an innovative M.S. program that integrates
information and library science and is accredited by the American Library
Association. The School also offers a B.S. in Information Transfer, a Ph.D.
in Information Studies and certificate program in archives and records
management. The master's degree is also offered in Manhattan at NYU's Bobst
Library. Selected master's degree and certificate courses are offered in
Westchester.
