Roslyn Muraskin Honored by
Long Island Association for AIDS Care
Dr. Roslyn Muraskin, director of the Long Island Women's Institute at
the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, was honored
by the Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Inc. (LIAAC) at its 8th Annual
Golf and Tennis Outing on July 12, 1999.
Dr. Muraskin, a professor of criminal justice and a resident of Middle
Island, NY, (formerly of Wantagh) was honored for her commitment to the
needs of women and her contributions to the development of young criminal
justice/health care professionals, which have been critical to Long Island's
fight against HIV/AIDS.
Along with honorees Carolyn McCarthy, U.S. Representative 4th District,
and Michael Balboni, New York State Senator 7th District, Dr. Muraskin
was recognized for her efforts at the Woodcrest Club in Muttontown with
proceeds benefiting services for women living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Muraskin recently received the Fellow's Award for 1999 presented
by the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences for her outstanding
scholarly achievement in criminal justice as well as outstanding service
in the field of criminal justice. She is also editor in chief of The
Justice Professional and is the editor of a new series Women and
the Law; the first work in the series was on Women and Justice:
Development of International Policy; the next work will be The African
American Woman and Criminal Justice to be followed by Women and
Sexual Harassment. She is the author of It's a Crime: Women
and Justice (Prentice Hall, available July 23) as well as Visions for
Change: Crime and Justice in the Twenty-first Century. Dr. Muraskin
currently serves as vice president of health and education for the Long
Island Women's Agenda.
For the past 13 years, LIAAC has pioneered the development of community-based
services for people living with AIDS, effective prevention strategies and
hard-hitting advocacy initiatives. LIAAC, as the oldest and largest AIDS
agency serving Long Island, is committed to assuring that its clients have
the resources, skills and services necessary to attain the highest quality
of life in the midst of the ongoing AIDS epidemic.
