New JD/MPA Receives State
Approval
Joint Degree Program Offered by Touro Law Center and
Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus
A new joint JD in Law/MPA in Health Care Administration
- preparing students for a variety of careers in law firms, health care
facilities, government agencies and consulting firms - will be offered this
fall in a program shared by Touro Law Center in Huntington, New York and
the College of Management's Department of Health Care and Public Administration
at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York.
The approval for the new Juris Doctor in Law/Master
of Public Administration in Health Care Administration was granted by the
New York State Education Department on April 2, 1997.
This joint program will promote integration between
the fields of law and health administration and will provide graduates with
the legal and managerial skills needed to serve effectively in a variety
of professional settings.
Highly Selective: The JD/MPA program, which is
highly selective, is designed to shorten the time necessary to earn both
degrees. Full-time students can complete the program in four years while
part-time students can finish in five years. JD courses are offered at Touro
Law Center where students gain a background in administrative law, elder
and family law, federal courts, ethics, environmental law, and government
regulations. Courses for the MPA degree are held at the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University and cover managed care administration, public
health problems and regulations, mental health administration, gerontology,
and aging and discrimination.
The program will address, among other topics, the
profound changes in the health care field, including problems of higher
medical costs, uninsured citizens and threats of cuts in Medicaid and Medicare.
"More than ever society needs professionals who understand the legislation,
organization, administration and legal aspects of health policy and management,
including managed care, new forms of health care delivery, quality assurance,
and a host of other issues," said Dr. David J. Steinberg, president
of Long Island University. "This joint degree will teach students how
best to create an interface between legal issues and public policy, administrative
and governmental concerns."
Touro Law Center Dean Howard A. Glickstein added
that it is the common goal of the professionals at Touro Law Center and
Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus to keep pace with the needs of
a continuously changing society.
"We are fortunate to have the opportunity
to combine the talents of the distinguished faculty at these fine institutions
for this highly specialized educational opportunity," said Dean Glickstein.
"Both schools are rich in the human resources needed to pioneer this
joint JD/MPA program which promises to maximize the potential of graduating
students in the emerging health law field."
Robert J. Sanator, dean of the College of Management
at the C.W. Post Campus, said, "The program is unique because it offers
cross-disciplinary training in both public administration and law, giving
students a broader range of professional opportunities."
The Master of Public Administration degree at C.W.
Post, offered through its College of Management, is the only program on
Long Island specially accredited by the National Association of Schools
of Public Affairs and Administration. The JD at Touro Law Center is specially
accredited by the American Bar Association and American Association of Law
Schools.
