Looking Forward, Looking Back:
On the Bridge to the Millennium
The Hutton House Lectures Looks at Areas of Geo-political Importance

The Hutton House Lectures program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is offering a free seminar on Wednesday, September 29 in which Ralph Buultjens, an award-winning author and professor of economics at New York University, discusses established patterns of global power and anticipated change as the world moves toward the new millennium.

Titled "Looking Forward, Looking Back: On the Bridge to the Millennium," the seminar will explore what has happened over the past century and consider what is happening as the world moves into the next century.

Buultjens notes that established patterns of global power are changing and seminal new developments are taking place. America remains strong internationally, but domestic politics are limiting its foreign policy. Russia has collapsed. Japan is weakening economically. The emergence of Euro currency could indicate the revival of Europe. The Middle East is full of tension. Other areas of geo-political and geo-economic importance have mixed prospects. How will these changes affect world power? Who will be the winners and losers among nations? How long will traditional power balances prevail? These and other questions will be examined in the context of current world events and the international experience of the past century as participants "stand on the bridge" looking forward to a new millennium.

Buultjens, former Nehru Professor/Professorial Fellow at the University of Cambridge, also serves on the faculty of the New School and is affiliated with several educational institutions abroad. He is a well-known media commentator who has been featured on BBC, CNN, ABC and other networks. He has been a consultant/advisor to the United Nations and major international organizations. Among Professor Buultjens' publications are Windows on India, The Decline of Democracy, Rebuilding the Temple -- Tradition and Change in Modern Asia, and China After Mao. His several hundred monographs, articles and essays have won numerous awards, including the Toynbee Prize for the Social Sciences, the French Order of Arts and Letters, and many honorary degrees.

"Looking Forward, Looking Back: On the Bridge to the Millennium" will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Hillwood Commons Lecture Hall. Registration is required for this free lecture.
