David Weiss Wins Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching
Northport resident David M. Weiss, Ph.D., a professor of health care
administration at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville,
was honored with a 1999 David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence. Long
Island University annually bestows the Newton Award to recognize professors
throughout its six campuses who continually strive to maintain Long Island
University's highest teaching standards.
Dr. Weiss has been affiliated with Long Island University for 23 years,
beginning his career at the Brooklyn Campus as an assistant professor of
sociology and anthropology. In 1974 he joined the C.W. Post Campus and
from 1983-85 served as assistant dean in the School of Business & Public
Administration. After serving as assistant dean from 1983 to 1985, Dr.
Weiss became assistant vice president for academic affairs. He received
tenure in 1978 as an assistant professor in the department of Health Care
and Public Administration and became a full professor in 1986.
Highly regarded for his expertise in health care and public administration,
Dr. Weiss is published in professional publications and academic journals.
He has served the greater academic community through his lectures, seminars
and presentations on the local and national levels. He is author of National
Guide to Funding in Aging, is a member of the Health and Welfare Council
of Long Island, and has served as consultant to the Minority Women's Business
Institute for the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Business Development
Agency.
Among his numerous professional associations, Dr. Weiss has served the
American Sociological Association and is a member of several honor societies.
A graduate of Long Island University with a B.A. in psychology and sociology,
Dr. Weiss also holds a master's degree in sociology and social psychology
from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in medical sociology and health
services research from the University of Pittsburgh.
Long Island University honored six educators with the 1999 David Newton
Award for Excellence in Teaching. Winners were selected by a committee
of their peers following nomination and support from faculty, students
and alumni. The award, which is named for Dr. David Newton, a former executive
vice president of Long Island University, was presented to the winners
at a ceremony and reception held at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island
University.
