Huntington resident Phyllis Dircks, a professor of English at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, was honored with a 1999 David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence. The main focus of Dr. Dircks' studies has been on 18th century English musical theater, a field in which she has played a key international role. Her publications include a biography on David Garrick and a study of the burlettas of Kate O'Hara. Dr. Dircks was honored by Long Island University in 1995 with a Trustees' Award for Scholarly Achievement.

After earning her bachelor's degree at St. John's University, Dr. Dircks received a master of arts from Brown University and later a Ph.D. from New York University.

Long Island University honored six educators with the 1999 David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Winners were selected by a committee of their peers following nomination and support from faculty, students and alumni.
