Sally Wahrmann Honored for Excellence in Teaching


Port Washington resident Sally A. Wahrmann, a professor of accounting at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, was honored with a 1999 David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence. Long Island University annually bestows the Newton Award to recognize professors throughout its six campuses who continually strive to maintain Long Island University's highest teaching standards.

Professor Wahrmann joined the faculty of Long island University in 1977 as an assistant professor at the Brooklyn Campus. In 1981, she came to the C.W. Post Campus as an adjunct professor and joined the full-time faculty in 1984. A dedicated instructor who consistently serves the needs of both the campus and the pupil, Professor Wahrmann has developed new curricula, innovative teaching techniques, and a student volunteer service.

Professor Wahrmann - whose field of expertise is public accounting - recently developed a course of study to help C.W. Post accounting students meet the new standards set forth by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She has served as advisor to the Accounting Society and is a six-time recipient of their Service to Students Award. Professor Wahrmann has administered the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which accounting students provide free tax assistance to senior citizens, and was selected to serve and mentor the new freshman PRIDE (Partners Reaching Individuals through Dedication and Encouragement) program at C.W. Post.

Long Island University honored six educators with the 1999 David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Winners were selected by a committee of their peers following nomination and support from faculty, students and alumni. The award, which is named for Dr. David Newton, a former executive vice president of Long Island University, was presented to the winners at a ceremony and reception held at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University.
