Jean Carlomusto Receives Trustees Award
for Scholarly Achievement
Jean Carlomusto, a resident of New Hyde Park, NY and a professor of
communication arts at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in
Brookville, NY, was honored with a 1999 Long Island University Trustees
Award for Scholarly Achievement (TASA) at the 21st annual awards ceremony
on April 20. Long Island University annually bestows the TASA to recognize
the professional contributions of its professors throughout its six campuses
in the New York metropolitan area. Professor Carlomusto was chosen for
her documentary film "To Catch a Glimpse," a 50-minute film that
Carlomusto describes as an unorthodox journey into the hearts and minds
of her family to solve the mystery surrounding her grandmother's death
in 1939. The film was recently acquired for the Museum of Modern Art's
permanent collection.
Professor Carlomusto is a video artist and media activist whose works
have been shown internationally in festivals and aired on public television.
Her work is considered an unorthodox mix of the documentary, experimental
and dramatic genres and has been recognized with grants from the Jerome
Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts and the Paul Robeson Foundation.
As a member of the C.W. Post faculty, Professor Carlomusto was awarded
a retention grant to create programming for a campus television station.
With her students, she launched Post Wire, a campus news magazine
show, and Talk Live. An advocate for bringing multimedia to the
University, Professor Carlomusto was an integral member of the committee
that drafted the campus' new master's degree in Interactive Multimedia
Arts; she now is chair of the program.
Professor Carlomusto was also part of the team which received a C.W.
Post Teaching and Learning Initiative grant for a collaborative multimedia
project on the undergraduate level.
A graduate of the master's program in interactive telecommunications
at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Professor Carlomusto
received her bachelor of fine arts degree in film from C.W. Post in 1981.
