Equine Courses Designed for the Beginner or Professional
Begun in the Fall of 1998, the new Equine Studies program at the C.W.
Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville has taken off like
a racehorse at Watership Down.
Originally started as a test to see how much interest the program would
generate, C.W. Post officials report eight months later that the program
is attracting residents from across Nassau, Suffolk and Queens and enrollment
has nearly doubled.
"We're off to a really great start," said Maureen Connolly,
director of contract programs in C.W. Post's School of Continuing Studies.
"As word spreads about C.W. Post's unique program, we're gaining momentum
as interest and enthusiasm build among professional and newcomers alike."
The only program of its kind on Long Island, the Equine Studies certificate
is designed for individuals interested in learning the skills necessary
to either obtain an entry level position or move up the career ladder within
the horse industry. The program focuses on employer-based needs for the
horse industry and consists of 10 courses leading to a Certificate in Equine
Studies. Students can learn the latest techniques in such areas as stable
management, conformation and selection, farrier science, reproduction and
breeding, equine health, and operations management. Courses combining sound
equine theory with practical skills development include:
- "Introduction to the Horse Industry," a survey course which
introduces the student to many aspects of the horse industry.
- "Equine Health," which studies the disease process, signs,
symptoms, treatment and prevention.
- "Equine Conformation and Selection," consisting of a study
of anatomy and physiology and the overall procedure for evaluating a horse
for purchase.
- "Farrier Science," required to maintain a healthy equine
foot.
- "Introduction to Stable Management," which covers maintenance
of physical facilities, identifying hazards, safety standards and record
keeping.
- "Equine Equipment and tack," including grooming, racing,
restraining, riding and veterinary equipment.
- "Financial Aspects of Stable Management," exploring the financial
considerations applicable to the management of the business enterprise
within the horse industry.
- "Operations Management," which includes planning, personnel
policies, legal requirements and general management principles.
- "Introduction to Horse Breeding," tackles the techniques
in the care, handling and management of horses at breeding farms, including
equine biology, genetics and weaning methods.
- "Equine Training Techniques," explores foal and yearling
training, conditioning, equipment and making vs. breaking the horse.
Students have the option of pursuing the certificate or taking individual
classes. For either option, participants have an unequaled opportunity
to interact with instructors who have "real world" experience
in the horse industry - such as Ted Landers, noted author and vocational
educator. Classes are held at the C.W. Post Campus in Brookville.
