C.W. Post Revamps Accounting Curriculum
Plans Calls for Creation of advisory Board and
"Smart Classrooms"
August 12, 1999 -- The School of Professional Accountancy at the C.W.
Post Campus of Long Island University has redesigned its curriculum to
include more high-tech courses, has created an advisory board consisting
of leading professionals in the accounting field, and is installing new
"smart classrooms" in the accounting school's headquarters.
The new undergraduate and graduate accounting curriculum has also been
designed to meet the new 150-hour education requirements of the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Education
Department. New undergraduate and graduate courses that will be taught
in state-of-the-art "smart classrooms" include computer auditing,
web-based tax research and accounting information systems.
"This new curriculum will thoroughly prepare future accountants
and tax specialists to meet the challenge of dramatic changes in the areas
of technology, accounting and tax rules, and business practices,"
said Lawrence Kalbers, Associate Dean of the C.W. Post College of Management
and Director of the School of Professional Accountancy.
New State Approved Degree Programs: Revamped C.W. Post degree
programs approved by the New York State Education Department include:
- The Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy, a 129-credit
program which will continue to be CPA-licensure qualifying through the
year 2008, when the 150 hours will be required. This program will now offer
a new accounting information systems course.
- The Accelerated Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in Accountancy,
which is a 150-hour CPA licensure-qualifying degree that can be completed
in five years (153 credits). It includes master's level concentrations
in professional accounting, information systems, and taxation. Students
qualify for a one-year reduction in the New York CPA experience requirement.
- Master of Science in Accountancy, which is a 150-hour CPA licensure-qualifying
30-credit program for qualified students with a B.S. in Accounting. Concentrations

to hook-up laptop computers right at their desks and have direct access

professors with a projection system to display their computer screens or
other audio-visual output to the entire class. Following the lead of other
top rated universities like Stanford and MIT, C.W. Post's smart classrooms
will be one of the first of their kind at a Long Island institution.
- Advisory Board Formed: A newly formed advisory board will provide
guidance, assistance, and feedback to the School of Professional Accountancy

fund-raising, student internships and full-time employment, and facilities
and resource utilization. Members of the Advisory Board are leading professionals
in the field of accountancy who currently hold, or recently have held,
positions as partners in public accounting or professional service firms;
or executive positions in corporations, government, or not-for-profit organizations.
