Korea Center Receives $50,000 Donation

More than 40 years ago, Dr. Changboh Chee left his homeland of Korea to come to America and teach college sociology. He struggled, alone, to learn the intricacies of western culture and language. Today, Dr. Chee focuses his energy on helping young college students avoid that very struggle.

Through a program he founded - the Korean Center at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus in Brookville, New York - Dr. Chee takes Korean students under his wing, helping them to learn the English language, adjust to the American lifestyle, and acquire job skills.

The effects of Dr. Chee's program have spread worldwide. He recently received a $50,000 donation for tuition scholarships from Saehan Group, a Seoul-based company.

Two of Dr. Chee's former students were instrumental in encouraging Saehan Group to support the Korea Center. Ms. Kim Hee Jung, along with her sister Yoo Kyung, attended Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus and now, both are employees of Saehan Group.

"Through many channels we are aware that Long Island University has had long and strong relations with the people of Korea, the Korean culture and Korean universities," said Lee Jae Kwan, president of Saehan Group. "This is our attempt to reinforce the university's fine work and help Dr. Chee do even more for his students and the development of a bridge between the two cultures."

Said Dr. Chee, "I am grateful to Saehan Group for its generosity and investment in the future generation." He added, "I'm looking forward to the fall semester when our Korean students can put this donation to good use."

The Korea Center, formerly known as the Korea Project, was founded in 1995. In addition to helping local students, it also hosts Korean cultural events, ranging from art exhibitions to dance performances.
