C.W. Post to Host Long Island Arts Education Conference
"The Balanced Mind IV" to Feature Artist/Musician Larry Rivers

October 22, 1999 - Art and music educators, administrators and PTA representatives from across Long Island will meet at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University on Tuesday, November 4 to discuss strategies for meeting the New York State Learning Standards and Assessments in the Arts for students in grades K to 12. The conference, "The Balanced Mind IV," will feature a keynote address by award-winning musician and artist Larry Rivers, who will speak on the creative process and perform with his Jazz Quartet.

Rivers began his career in the 1940s as a jazz saxophonist and began painting by day. He entered the New York art scene and established himself as the "badboy" of the art world. His motifs are drawn from changing society in which preoccupation with morality, sentimentality, decadence, violence and love alternate.

"The Balanced Mind IV" is sponsored by the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the C.W. Post Campus; Tilles Center for the Performing Arts; the C.W. Post Institute for Arts and Culture; the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education - Nassau County Chapter; Nassau BOCES Arts in Education Programs; and the Nassau County Coalition for Arts Education.

The conference begins at 8 a.m. and runs to 2:30 p.m. It will feature 22 workshops taught by several Long Island educators and artists who have successfully developed programs that incorporate the Learning Standards for the Arts across all areas of study. Workshops will focus on art, dance and movement, interdisciplinary arts, music, and theatre. Registration at the door is $85 per person and includes continental breakfast and lunch. For registration information, contact Dr. Mary Jane Bolin at (516) 396-2345.

Tilles Center for the Performing Arts is located on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), in Brookville, New York.
