C.W. Post to Bury Time Capsule at "Turning 2000" Celebration

October 8, 1999 - As a kick-off to the long-awaited Turning 2000 Millennial Weekend at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, students, staff and faculty will gather on Thursday, October 14, 1999 to preserve their past as they move into the future. With the burial of an aluminum time capsule, 36" long and 12" in diameter, the campus community will preserve for the next generation of students the memorabilia, books, research and photos that capture the spirit of today's "Pioneers." The time capsule will be dedicated on Thursday, October 14, 1999 at 12:30 p.m. in Conolly Circle in front of Kumble Hall.

The capsule, to be opened fifty years from now, will contain items that represent a broad spectrum of campus life and a glimpse into the daily life of 20th Century Long Islanders on the brink of a new millennium. From campus photos and sports equipment to daily issues of Newsday, the C.W. Post Time Capsule will present a comprehensive view of Long Island's North Shore to students in 2049.

"For many years, the C.W. Post Campus community has sought to maintain a momentum to propel us into the next millennium," said C.W. Post Provost Joe Shenker. "Fifty years from now, our successors will be able to look back and not only see how far they have come, but also see where they need to go as the campus community of 2049 aims for another new century."

Students and staff members are eager for an opportunity to literally be a part of history. "It will be very exciting for C.W. Post students of the future to see what we are like now," said 18 year-old Nicole Verdi, a psychology major from Rego Park. "I'll bet we share many things in common with them, and it will be interesting to find out our similarities as well as our differences."

"I'm glad that the campus is opening the capsule in only fifty years," said 20 year-old Sharif Washington, a public relations major from the Bronx. "So many of us will still be around and can return to tell the students first-hand what life at C.W. Post in the 90s was like."

The burial of the C.W. Post Time Capsule officially begins the Turning 2000 Millennial Weekend at C.W. Post, an all-encompassing conference on the new millennium to be held from October 14 to 16, 1999. Planned lectures, presentations and discussion will revolve around issues of critical importance to New Yorkers with the coming of the next millennium. They include: the environment, the economy, politics, technology, American pluralism and social equity, literature and the arts, health and aging, ethics, culture, spiritual life, and education.
