Howard Lorber,
CEO of Nathan's Famous,
unveils the sign of the new Lorber Hall.
Historic Mansion is Named
for "Famous" C.W. Post Alumnus
The Chairman and CEO of Nathan's Famous, Inc. -
the legendary purveyor of hot dogs which has grown into a major player in
the expanding food industry - graduated with two degrees from the C.W. Post
Campus of Long Island University in Brookville.
Now, giving meaning to the phrase, "giving
something back," Howard M. Lorber has made a leadership gift that has
allowed the university to begin the restoration of a historic campus building
where he spent the bulk of his time as an accounting student.
The building, a handsome Georgian Colonial mansion,
is the former home of William E. Hutton, brother of financial wizard E.F.
Hutton. Today, it houses the School of Professional Accountancy and The
Hutton House Lectures program.
The building was named Lorber Hall at a dedication
ceremony on Wednesday, June 4, 1997. Lorber graduated from the C.W. Post
Campus in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in sociology, and in 1991 with a
master's in taxation. He has been a member of the Long Island University
Board of Trustees since 1988.
The renovation project, which will restore the
building to its original charm and increase classroom and office space,
will take from one to three years to complete. The total renovation cost
is about $1.7 million.
Lorber's leadership gift has allowed the university
to begin phase one of the construction project. A fund-raising effort is
being organized to secure additional funds to complete the project. The
mansion, built in 1927, was purchased by Long Island University in 1965.
"I am looking forward to seeing this magnificent
mansion returned to its original beauty," said Lorber. "The new
classrooms and modern facilities will enhance C.W. Post's already strong
accounting and taxation programs."
