Hewlett-Packard Donates New Computer System
to C.W. Post
January 5, 2000 - Technology changes faster than you can boot
up your new PC. Thanks to Hewlett-Packard, the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University in Brookville is keeping pace.
C.W. Post qualified last spring for a HP 3000 system under
the HP 3000 System Grant Program. The $213,000 grant, which covers
a HP 3000 server and various software programs and licenses,
will give Computer Science students access to a Data Base Management
System and today's most popular programming languages, including
JAVA, COBOL and Pascal. A new computer science lab, scheduled
to open in Pell Hall in the Spring 2000 semester, will feature
18 Pentium III workstations and access to the new HP server.
It will be open to undergraduate and graduate students. The Computer
Science Department plans to build a library of professional strength
project management and information systems development tools
for the new lab.
"This new computer lab will bring us to the same level
of technology that's available in the industrial world,"
said John Keane, associate professor and director of graduate
programs in the Computer Science Department. "We will be
able to train our students in the use and application of that
software."
The HP 3000 server will also be accessible from the Eugene
D. Homer Memorial Computer Science Lab, which was built in room
225 of Pell Hall in 1991 in memory of a professor who taught
in the department. This lab will also receive new 18 Pentium
3500 PCs and laser printers.
The Commercial Systems Division of Hewlett-Packard designed
the HP 3000
System Grant Program to assist colleges and universities in technology
education. Participating schools must agree to use the system
in the teaching environment to cover such topics as programming,
databases and interoperability. The system can also be used for
special projects.
The C.W. Post Computer Science Department offers the B.S.
in Information Systems, B.S. in Computer Science, an M.S. in
Information Systems, an M.S. in Management Engineering and an
M.A. in Computer Science Education.
