Senator Marcellino Obtains Grant for Dance
Series at Tilles Center
December 21, 1999 - Senator Carl Marcellino (R-C), New York
State Senator for the 5th District of Nassau and Suffolk Counties,
has obtained a generous governmental grant to support Tilles
Center for the Performing Arts, located on the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University. The grant will support programs,
including a repeat of the successful "Invitation to Dance"
series of Tilles' last season.
"The New York State Legislature has been continually
supportive of Tilles Center and, through its generosity, has
brought many successful programs to Long Islanders," said
Elliott Sroka, Executive Director of Tilles Center. "Through
its support last year, we were able to bring great dance companies
from around the world to Long Island for the first 'Invitation
to Dance' series, and this second grant will continue the quality
presentations of dance for which Tilles Center is known."
"We appreciate the hard work of Senator Marcellino and
the State Legislature," added Sroka. "With Senator
Marcellino's help, we will be able to continue to bring fine
performances, unique programs and special artists to Long Island."
Marcellino, a member of the State Senate since March 1995,
said, "The Arts are vital for everyone, at every age and
a real asset to the business community in attracting and holding
talented people. I am anxious to support as many programs as
I can which bring culture, art and performance to the residents
of Long Island."
This season's "Invitation to Dance" series will
span traditional Russian ballet to the cutting-edge work of some
of today's most brilliant choreographers. Other "Invitation
to Dance" attractions have included soloists of the Bolshoi
and Kirov ballets performing works from the classic ballet repertoire,
and the companies founded by such contemporary luminaries as
Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Edward Villella.
Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, located on the C.W.
Post Campus of Long Island University, is the premier concert
hall for the 2.7 million people of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Tilles Center presents its own seasons of classical and popular
entertainment for adults and children and is also the theatrical
home for many of Long Island's leading arts organizations, including
the Long Island Philharmonic, the Friends of the Arts, the Eglevsky
Ballet, the National Grand Opera and the New York Virtuosi.
The stage at Tilles Center has featured some of the world's most
honored orchestras and soloists, as well as popular artists of
Broadway and Hollywood, leading dance companies and opera and
singing groups. Each summer, the Big Apple performs in its own
Big Top, pitched on the C.W. Post campus. Tilles Center also
sponsors special educational outreach programs, including the
Stage II and Tilles For Kids initiatives, to introduce
school-aged children to the arts.
