DiNapoli Obtains Grant to Support Tilles
Center
for the Performing Arts
January 13, 2000 - Assemblyman Thomas DiNapoli (D), a member
of the New York State Assembly for the 16th District Portion
of Nassau County, has obtained a generous governmental grant
to support Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, located on
the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville,
New York. The grant will support programs, renovations and expanded
offerings at Tilles Center, the premier concert hall for the
2.7 million people of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
"The New York State Legislature has been continually
supportive of Tilles Center and, through its generosity, has
brought many successful programs to Long Islanders. We appreciate
of the hard work of Assemblyman DiNapoli and of the State Government,"
said Elliott Sroka, Executive Director of Tilles Center. "Through
Assemblyman DiNapoli's support, we will be able to further our
mission to provide programming in music, dance and culture to
Long Island audiences."
Tilles Center, established in 1981, presents its own seasons
of entertainment for adults and children and is the theatrical
home for many of Long Island's leading arts organizations - the
Long Island Philharmonic, Friends of the Arts, the Eglevsky Ballet,
the National Grand Opera and New York Virtuosi. The stage at
Tilles Center has featured some of the world's most honored orchestras
and soloists, as well as popular artists of Broadway and Hollywood,
leading dance companies and opera and singing groups. Tilles
Center also sponsors special educational outreach programs, including
the Stage II and Tilles For Kids initiatives, to
introduce school-aged children to the arts.
Of the Tilles grant, DiNapoli commented, "More and more,
we appreciate the role of the cultural arts to help attract and
retain talented workers. I am glad that the Assembly's grant
for Tilles Center will provide Long Islanders the ability to
enjoy one of the premiere cultral facilities in the nation.
I hope that my colleagues will share my continued commitment
to the arts throughout the State and help to expand this type
of assistance."
Though still in planning stages, the Tilles Center Board of
Trustees has outlined several goals to make the Center - which
welcomes more than a quarter million people each year - more
attractive and accommodating. The Board hopes to enhance programming
and service staff and to augment the already famous Tilles Center
line-up of more than 200 shows per year.
