C.W. Post Offers Counseling Services for Motor Vehicle Accident Survivors
New Sessions Added for March

Nearly 3 million people suffer injuries as a result of motor vehicle accidents every year. But long after the physical injuries have healed, the emotional trauma of an accident lingers. Motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading cause of post traumatic stress disorder in the United States. Symptoms -- include disturbing memories or dreams, fear of driving, difficulty getting along with family and friends, diminished interest in activities, sleep difficulties, angry outbursts, and difficulty concentrating -- can wreak havoc on a victim's life.

To treat individuals who are trying to overcome the trauma of a motor vehicle accident, the Psychological Services Center at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville is offering psycho-educational groups for accident survivors. Members receive education on strategies that can help relieve the distress associated with healing and recovering, and benefit from the support of others who have been through similar experiences.

Each therapy group is run by a licensed clinical psychologist and a clinical psychology doctoral student. Groups begin meeting in March 2000 and meet for 12 weekly sessions. Fees are on a sliding scale basis. For additional information, call Valerie Gaus, Ph.D., New York State licensed clinical psychologist, at C.W. Post's Psychological Services Center, (516) 299-3211.
