C.W. Post Institute for Arts & Culture
to Showcase Artwork of Local Students
The Institute for Arts & Culture at the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University has opened the third in a series of
community art exhibits titled "Standards of Excellence"
featuring the work of various local school districts. Students
from the Brentwood School District and St. Peter of Alcantara
School in Port Washington will showcase their work from now through
May 26, 2000 in an exhibit co-sponsored with Tilles Center for
the Performing Arts. A reception on Saturday, April 1 from 11
a.m. to 1 p.m., will officially open the exhibit.
The Long Island Art Teachers Association has organized the
exhibits for display in the Patron's Lounge (Room W1) of Tilles
Center for the Performing Arts, located on the C.W. Post Campus,
Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville. The exhibits rotate
every six to eight weeks. The project expands the Institute's
mission of making the arts an integral part of the lives of Long
Island University students, faculty and staff, and enhancing
the overall educational and cultural experience of the campus
community.
"These exhibits have brought together C.W. Post and the
Long Island community in a special way," says Andrew Berger,
director of Education and Outreach for Tilles Center. "It
is simply inspiring to see the work of these young artists. One
student painted a starry night inspired by van Gogh; another
painted a bag inspired by Native American culture. I can't think
of a better way to further the mission of the Institute."
The first exhibit, which ran from October 30 to December 24,
featured the work of students from the Herricks Union Free School
District's three elementary schools, as well as the middle and
senior high schools. The second exhibit, which ran from January
4 to February 20, featured artwork by junior and senior students
at the Friends Academy Upper School in Locust Valley and by third
and fourth grade students of Washington Rose School in Roosevelt.
Two Brentwood elementary schools are participating in the
third exhibit from now through May 26. Under the direction of
art teacher Linda Egan, students Jose Uceda and Amanda Gatti
of Hemlock Park Elementary School are presenting their work.
Southwest Elementary School students Abner Lobo, Joseph Keach,
Jessica Castaldini, Kelly O'Neill, Michelle Conrad, Jonathan
Pena, Katherine Buscarino, Nyazia Griggs, Sandra Hopkins and
Lianne McIntosh are showcasing their work.
Also participating in the third exhibit are students from
St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington. Art teacher Sr. Elizabeth
Wallace is directing the work of students Kristin Augenthaler,
Christine Bilms, Thalia Madrazo, Thomas Mansfield, Emily Mazzaferro,
Oliver Musso, Philip Rolling, Katie Sapienza, Jennifer Schachter,
William Schweitzer, Kimberly Spallone and Victoria Wilhelm.
The "Standards of Excellence" series of exhibits
at Tilles Center is one of only two public spaces in New York
State devoted to rotating exhibits of student art K-12.
The Institute for Arts & Culture was established in 1998.
It serves as a clearinghouse for information on professional
and academic arts activities at C.W. Post by promoting attendance
at music, dance, theatre performances, art exhibits and various
cultural programs. The Institute also coordinates community educational
outreach programs that are offered by Tilles Center and develops
long-range strategies for exploring and implementing creative
uses of the arts in the university's curriculum.
