1,400 to Graduate from C.W. Post on Mother's
Day, May 14
More than 1,400 students will don their caps and gowns on
Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14 , 2000 when the
C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University holds its 42nd annual
commencement exercises. C.W. Post - a private, co-educational
institution of higher learning located in Brookville, N.Y. -
has awarded more than 80,000 degrees in its 46-year history.
Sandra Torres of Central Islip, a mother of two, is C.W. Post's
valedictorian. The 31-year-old psychology major will give her
valedictory speech at commencement ceremonies which begin at
9:40 a.m. in front of Humanities Hall.
Proud of her Hispanic heritage, Sandra Torres is sensitive
to issues of ethnicity and plans to dedicate her future to providing
quality healthcare to ethnic groups by pursuing a career in medicine.
She has been accepted by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
of Yeshiva University and will begin her studies in August. In
a fitting tribute to the May 14th holiday, Sandra's mother, Rose
Pagan of Brentwood, will also be graduating from C.W. Post with
an MPA degree in Public and Health Care Administration. The
C.W. Post Salutatorian is Allison A. Swalboski, a 21-year-old
clinical art therapy major from Fairfax, Virginia.
The commencement speaker is a Los Angeles-based equity investor
and merchant banker: Gary Winnick, a 1969 C.W. Post alumnus,
is founder and chairman of Global Crossing, Ltd., which is building
and operating one of the world's most advanced global, fiber
optic networks. Winnick - who is also chairman, president and
CEO of Pacific Capital Group - will be awarded an Honorary Degree
along with two other highly accomplished individuals: James Shuart,
long-time president of Hofstra University, and Anthony Pico,
chairman of the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay nation and a national
advocate for Native American economic independence. For nine
years, Pico has hosted C.W. Post students who volunteer at his
California reservation.
Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented to three successful
C.W. Post graduates: 1967 alumnus Michael Emmerman, a prominent
volunteer expert on disaster response and a managing director/portfolio
manager at the New York City-based investment management firm
of Neuberger Berman, LLC; and Rick (1971) and Tina Lippert Rosen
(1970) of Boca Raton, Florida, benefactors of the new C.W. Post
Arboretum Initiative. Mr. Rosen is a Senior Vice President/Investments
at Salomon Smith Barney, Inc.
The Class of 2000 includes 681 baccalaureate degree candidates
and 732 master's degree candidates, and
8 doctoral students who will receive the Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology.
C.W. Post is one of three residential campuses of Long Island
University, the eighth largest private university in the United
