Eric Lichten wins Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching

July 6, 2000 - Eric Lichten, a professor in the Sociology Department at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y., was honored with a 2000 David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence. Long Island University annually bestows the Newton Award to recognize professors throughout its six campuses who continually strive to maintain the institution's highest teaching standards.

Dr. Lichten has been teaching at the university level since 1974. He came to C.W. Post in 1981, and was shortly thereafter invited to adapt two courses for the Honors Department: Introduction to Sociology and Social Institutions. He still teaches those courses.

In 1985, Dr. Lichten received the C.W. Post Honor Society Award for excellence in teaching. In recognition for his scholarly achievements, he received the Long Island University Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement in 1989. Believing passionately in the transforming power of critical teaching, Dr. Lichten challenges students to think anew about their lives, society, and their place in humanizing the world.

Long Island University honored five educators with the 2000 David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Winners were selected by a committee of their peers, following nomination and support from faculty, students and alumni. The award is named for Dr. David Newton, a former executive vice president of Long Island University.
