Palmer School Graduates Celebrate a Near Perfect
Employment Record for the Fifth Straight Year


June 28, 2000 - For the fifth year in a row, graduates of the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at Long Island University are celebrating a near perfect employment rate.

According to Mary Westermann-Cicio, Assistant Dean of the Palmer School, a recent survey six months after graduation revealed all of the 1999 graduates are fully employed, with only two of the 50 respondents actively searching for a higher level professional position. The average starting salary for the 1999 graduates who earned degrees in library science was $37,962, with the typical time from graduation to professional employment being less than 45 days. Graduates landed jobs in the following sectors:

  • Public Libraries - 40%
  • School Media Centers - 31%
  • Academic Libraries - 10%
  • Other (Information industry, archives, etc.) - 9%

Most graduates (90%) took employment in New York State, with the remaining graduates employed in New Jersey, Arizona and Hawaii.

The Palmer School offers an innovative M.S. program that integrates information and library science and is accredited by the American Library Association. The School also offers a B.S. in Information Transfer, a Ph.D. in Information Studies, and a certificate program in Archives and Records Management. The master's degree is also offered in Manhattan at NYU's Bobst Library. Selected master's degree and certificate courses are offered at the Palmer School's Westchester campus, located at Pace University in Pleasantville.
