Douglas Dreilinger Wins Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching

June 30, 2000 - Douglas Dreilinger, associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Reading at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y., was honored recently with a 2000 David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence. Long Island University annually bestows the Newton Award to recognize professors throughout its six campuses who continually strive to maintain the institution's highest teaching standards.

Planning to stay just a few years, Dr. Dreilinger came to C.W. Post via Texas Tech University, where he earned his Ph.D. That was more than 29 years ago. Throughout the following three decades, he earned the respect of colleagues and students alike. His dedication to C.W. Post students is clear. Dr. Dreilinger takes his teaching duties seriously, promoting fairness, respect, courtesy and responsibility at all times in his classroom. "Without students, there is no reason to teach," said Dreilinger. "It is the duty of educators to create a positive, non-stressful learning environment in which to foster students' natural desire to learn."

Dr. Dreilinger was among five Long Island University educators honored with the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Winners were selected by a committee of their peers, after nomination and support from faculty, students and alumni. The award is named for Dr. David Newton, a former executive vice president of Long Island University.
