Scott McGowan Wins Newton Award for Excellence
in Teaching
June 30, 2000 - Westchester resident Scott McGowan, professor
and chairperson of the Department of Counseling and Development
at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville,
N.Y., was honored with a 2000 David Newton Award for Teaching
Excellence. Long Island University annually bestows the Newton
Award to recognize professors throughout its six campuses who
continually strive to maintain the institution's highest teaching
standards.
Dr. McGowan has served as editor for three distinguished journals
in his field: The Journal of Counseling and Development,
The Journal of Humanistic Counseling Education and
Development, and The Journal for Professional Counselors.
He has published more than 35 research studies and articles,
and has created and hosted more than 200 counseling-related television
programs for PBS and other educational channels.
Among his numerous professional associations, Dr. McGowan
is the past chairperson of the Counsel for American Counseling
Association Journal Editors and immediate past president of the
Counseling Association for Humanistic Education and Development.
He has also been nominated for president of the American Counseling
Association.
Dr. McGowan has received numerous awards for his outstanding
achievements, including the American Counseling Association Hitchcock
Distinguished Professional Service Award and an Outstanding Faculty
Award for the counseling programs which C.W. Post conducts at
West Point. He founded the Chi Sigma Iota Chapter at C.W. Post
and dedicates much of his time outside the classroom to mentoring
his students - the counselors of tomorrow.
Long Island University honored five educators with the 2000
David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Winners were selected
by a committee of their peers, following nomination and support
from faculty, students and alumni. The award is named for Dr.
David Newton, a former executive vice president of Long Island
University.
