C.W. Post Institute for Arts & Culture
Showcases Artwork of Local Students
Sewanhaka students share their love for art with the
local community
The Institute for Arts & Culture at the C.W. Post Campus
of Long Island University has opened the fourth in a series of
community art exhibits titled "Standards of Excellence,"
which features the work of various local school districts. Students
from the Sewanhaka School District will showcase their work from
now through July 28, 2000 in an exhibit co-sponsored with Tilles
Center for the Performing Arts.
The Long Island Art Teachers Association has organized the
exhibits for display in the Patron's Lounge (Room W1) of Tilles
Center for the Performing Arts, located on the C.W. Post Campus,
Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville. The exhibits rotate
every six to eight weeks. The project expands the Institute's
mission of making the arts an integral part of the lives of Long
Island University students, faculty and staff, and enhancing
the overall educational and cultural experience of the campus
community.
"These exhibits have brought together C.W. Post and the
Long Island community in a special way," says Andrew Berger,
director of Education and Outreach for Tilles Center. "It
is simply inspiring to see the work of these young artists. Using
watercolors, pencils, charcoal, weaving and other media, these
students have created works of art that demonstrate a maturity
beyond their years. They are fitting participants in the mission
of the Institute."
Elmont Memorial High School will be represented by teacher
Arlene Schwen and students Alexis Redman, Alicia Stephenson,
Hung Kit-Ma, Daniell Rhomms and Israel Esquivel. Floral Park
Memorial High School will send the work of Susan Conte, Laura
Hogg, Jenny Adolfson, Sean Vecchione and Mike Damino. Their work
is directed by teachers Laura Alden, Karne Caporale, Adina Goldfarb
and Susan Lucey. Evelyn Kuo, Andrew Koskotas, Jenny DeRosa, Amanda
Allianse and Marialuisa Cimino will represent H. Frank Carey
High School with their teachers Michael Cartolano, Ron Lopez,
Ronny Lipitz and Audrey Miller.
New Hyde Park Memorial High School will showcase the work
of students Linda Komatsubara, Chrissy Thanicatt Ashley Dunne,
Kristin Sorrentino and Kristina Mazurkiewicz. Their teachers
are Sandra Carrion, Linda Toner, Scott Shevins and Esther Wohl.
Finally, Sewanhaka High School will be represented by students
Patrick Foster, Kenneth Walsh, Elizabeth Ostrowski, Michael Chao
and Claire Daly. Their work is directed by teachers Audrey Miller,
Kieran Duffy and Heather Anastasio.
The "Standards of Excellence" series of exhibits
at Tilles Center is one of only two public spaces in New York
State devoted to rotating exhibits of student art K-12.
The Institute for Arts & Culture was established in 1998.
It serves as a clearinghouse for information on professional
and academic arts activities at C.W. Post by promoting attendance
at music, dance, theater performances, art exhibits and various
cultural programs. The Institute also coordinates community educational
outreach programs that are offered by Tilles Center and develops
long-range strategies for exploring and implementing creative
uses of the arts in the university's curriculum.
