Rich in History: Founded in 1798, the United States Marine Band is America's
oldest professional music organization. Named "The President's Own"
by Thomas Jefferson, the rich history of the Marine Band spans centuries,
wars and the term of every president since John Adams. Today, "The
President's Own" United States Marine Band offers a unique blend of
traditional concert band and contemporary wind ensemble music.
Led by Lt. Col. Timothy W. Foley, the "The President's Own"
United States Marine Band performs more than 600 commitments annually, with
over 200 of those at the White House. President Clinton, known to sit in
with the Marine Band musicians on several numbers, declared, "The band's
precision and discipline serve as a standard for aspiring musicians throughout
the nation." The United States Marine Band is known for its "glowing
richness," and was proclaimed "the best in the world" by
The Washington Post.
