Health Care for Diverse Communities
C.W. Post Bioethics conference to address ethical issues
and practical solutions on October 19
As the United States population becomes increasingly diverse
- both ethnically and culturally - today's health care organizations
must provide competent, flexible care that is sensitive to different
cultures. The Long Island Center for Ethics of the C.W. Post
Campus of Long Island University will share some new tactics
and theories at its third annual "Bioethics Conference:
Health Care for Diverse Communities: Ethical Issues and Practical
Solutions." The conference will take place from 8 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 19 at Tilles Center, C.W. Post
Campus, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) in Brookville, N.Y.
Distinguished guest presenters - physicians, attorneys, administrators,
researchers, ethicists - will address the 21st century challenges
posed by the diversity of both consumers and the healthcare agency
workforce. "In order for healthcare organizations to successfully
provide responsive care, multicultural skills and knowledge are
needed," said Dr. Ellen M. McGee, chair of the conference
and director of the Long Island Center for Ethics. "This
conference will describe programs and management strategies to
meet the challenge of serving a diverse population of employees
and patients." She added that the panelists will examine
ways in which providers can respond to changing demographics,
consumer needs and market forces -- and still fulfill their ethical
and social justice goals.
Marian Gray Secundy, Ph.D., Director of the National Center
for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University,
will deliver the keynote address. Secundy is a member of several
National Institute of Health's advisory panels and served as
co-chair of a workgroup for the Clinton Health Care Task Force.
