C.W. Post Receives Construction Permit
to Build $15 Million Recreation Center
September 14, 2000 - The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University
today received a construction permit from the Village of Brookville
to build a new $15 million recreation center.
The facility, which will be called the Edmund T. and Jeanette
Pratt Recreation Center, will cover 77,000 square feet and include
an eight-lane swimming pool, three full-size basketball courts,
an indoor jogging track, racquetball courts, and aerobic and
weight rooms.
Stanmar, Inc., a Massachusetts-based firm nationally known
for designing and building multi-purpose athletic and recreational
facilities, will oversee the project. Construction is expected
to begin next month. The facility will take 18 to 24 months to
complete.
"This new recreation center has been designed to give
our students the finest facilities for competitive and recreational
sports and fitness," said Dr. Joseph Shenker, Provost of
the C.W. Post Campus.
Not only will the facility provide healthy recreational opportunities
for the entire student body but it will also include locker rooms
for our collegiate teams as well as new classrooms and laboratory
facilities for health and physical education students.
"Our students can now look forward to exercising, training
and competing in a modern, well-equipped facility that includes
technological innovations," said Vinny Salamone, Director
of Athletics.
The recreation center is funded by a multi-million dollar
gift from Edmund T. Pratt, Jr., the former chairman and CEO of
Pfizer, Inc., and his wife, Jeanette. It is also funded by other
private donors and a New York State Dormitory Authority Bond.
"For the first time in its history, the C.W. Post Campus
is launching several multi-million dollar construction and renovation
projects funded by the generous support of alumni and friends
who believe in our mission," said Dr. David J. Steinberg,
president of Long Island University. "For generations to
come, our students will be grateful to these donors who are helping
to transform our campus in the new century."
