Long Island Arts Education Conference -
Nov. 4
Marvin Hamlisch to be a Keynote Speaker
Art and music educators, administrators and PTA representatives from
across Long Island will meet at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University
on Tuesday, November 4 to discuss how today's teachers can successfully
address the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts in the K-12 curriculum.
The conference, "The Balanced Mind II," will feature a keynote
address by famed award-winning musician/composer Marvin Hamlisch. The event
is sponsored by the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the C.W. Post
Campus of Long Island University in conjunction with Tilles Center for the
Performing Arts; the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education-Nassau
County Chapter; Nassau BOCES Arts-In-Education Programs; and the Nassau
County Coalition for Arts Education.
"The state has set high standards in the arts for students to meet
and some of our very creative teachers have begun developing strategies
and methods for implementing these standards in music, art, theatre and
dance," said John McNeur, chairman of the conference. "This conference
gives teachers and administrators an opportunity to see what others are
doing and, perhaps, some new ideas to take back to their schools."
The conference features three speakers:
- Marvin Hamlisch is best known as a composer, having written for film,
stage and concert hall. A Chorus Line, They're Playing Our Song, and The
Goodbye Girl have become Broadway classics. Mr. Hamlisch holds the position
of Principal Pops Conductor with both the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestras.
- Edward T. Lalor is Assistant Commissioner for Curriculum, Instruction
and Assessment for the New York State Department of Education. Overseeing
curriculum development in all subject areas, and serving as chief liaison
for the NYS Curriculum and Assessment Council, Mr. Lalor has been key in
the development of "The New Compact for Learning" and "The
New York State Learning Standards."
- Dr. James O. Froseth is Professor of Music, Department Coordinator,
Chair of the Graduate Committee and Doctoral Advisor for Music Education
at The University of Michigan. He is a leader in the study of music teacher
education, in particular, as an advocate of non-verbal modes of music teaching
and performance-based assessment of music learning. He will be leading
two workshop sessions.
The conference will also feature 14 workshops by several Long Island
educators and artists who have successfully developed programs that incorporate
The Learning Standards for the Arts across all areas of study.
The program runs from 8 am. to 3 p.m. at Tilles Center for the Performing
Arts on the C.W. Post Campus. Conference registration includes continental
breakfast and lunch; pre-conference registration is $60 by October 17, registration
at the door is $70 per person. For more information contact Dr. Mary Jane
