C.W. Post Campus to Sponsor Learning Tour of East Harlem
Electronic Educational Village to share area
history and culture with 7th - 12th graders

Junior high and high school students from East Harlem, Bridgehampton, Half Hollow Hills and Westbury won't be attending class on November 16, 2000. Instead, they'll spend the day bringing history, art and culture to life in East Harlem.

The Electronic Educational Village at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University (Brookville, New York) is sponsoring the event. This grassroots learning community -- which has been inducted into the Smithsonian Institution archives -- was developed by the Educational Technology Department at C.W. Post. It brings together schools, cultural and community resources, business and industry to help children learn in innovative new ways that combine technology and traditional educational techniques.

EEV will team up with the Taller Boricua Gallery, a 27-year-old visual arts organization in East Harlem (106th and Lexington Ave.) The exhibits that usually occupy the gallery will be removed to make way for blank mural paper, laptops, project units, digital cameras, index cards, paper, scissors, paints, chalk and other materials that will greet the 100 students scheduled to create their own artwork that day.

The schools participating include:

  • Bridgehampton Middle and High Schools
  • Half Hollow Hills' Candlewood & West Hollow Middle Schools & High School West
  • Westbury High School
  • East Harlem's Heritage School, Central Park East Secondary School, Jackie Robinson, and Young Women's Leadership School.

"This event is meant to acquaint students with the incredible beauty and culture of East Harlem," says Dr. Bette Schneiderman, co-chair of Educational Technology Department at C.W. Post and a leader of the EEV. "We want all attending to experience the East Harlem community while building relationships with East Harlem students. I have no doubt that walking the streets and creating works of art together with students from the neighborhood will be an incredible learning experience for us all. All people attending will be invited to Bridgehampton in April, the C.W. Post campus in May, and to continue their adventure online in between."

The all-day event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with an introduction by Taller Boricua staff, and participating musicians, artists, teachers, museum educators, representatives from cultural and community groups, and business people. In all, 80 adults are expected to participate. Once introductions are complete, the students and adults will break into four groups for a tour of East Harlem. Along the way, they will stop at Graffiti Hall of Fame, and the gardens and lake in Central Park. They will meet up with artist James de la Vega, who will display his art on the sidewalk. Writers, videographers and photographers will record each tour.

After a traditional Spanish lunch of rice, beans and chicken, the students will create their own artwork and enjoy listening to live Spanish music. Throughout the day, a virtual reality camera crew will capture the magical moments of learning for display on the EEV Web site at http://eev.liu.edu/eev01.
