C.W. Post to Establish Scholarship
in Honor of Slain Atlanta Sheriff-Elect
Derwin Brown, Advocate of Civil Rights, was C.W. Post Graduate

Brookville, NY, December 21, 2000 - The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, alma mater to slain Atlanta sheriff-elect Derwin Brown, announced today it will establish a scholarship in his honor.

The $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in criminal justice, the subject area in which Brown earned his bachelor's degree from C.W. Post in 1975.

Brown was known for his high moral standards and his dedication to the preservation of civil rights. "We are saddened to learn of Mr. Brown's death and feel it is fitting that his legacy be continued by the law enforcement leaders of the future," said Dr. Joseph Shenker, Provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. Dr. Shenker added, "We strive daily to teach our students the importance of civic duty and service to society and we feel that Derwin Brown was a shining example of this fundamental principle."

According to news reports, Brown was shot to death by one or more gunmen on December 15 on his way home from a party in his honor. Brown was to take office as sheriff of DeKalb County in suburban Atlanta on January 1. According to Newsday, he had publicly stated he would drastically reform the sheriff's office, which he said was corrupt, and a corrections system he believed was designed to keep African American men oppressed.

The criteria for the "Derwin Brown Memorial Scholarship," such as grade point average and financial need, are currently being determined by the university, according to Dr. Shenker. Students interested in the scholarship should contact Joanne Graziano, Director of Financial Assistance at (516) 299-2338.

C.W. Post's Criminal Justice Department offers a B.A. degree in criminal justice, an M.S. in criminal justice, and an accelerated B.A./M.S. in criminal justice. Students enrolled in the program receive in-depth exposure to all aspects of the criminal justice system such as juvenile delinquency, internet crime, gangs and organized crime, and criminal profiling.

C.W. Post, which is located in Brookville, New York, is a campus of Long Island University, the 8th largest private university in the nation.
