East Meets West to Foster Higher Education Long Island University Exchange Program Strengthens Korean Ties Dating Back to the 1950s

Long Island University in Brookville, New York, and Kyonggi University in Korea are joining together to foster internationalization of higher education through a Korean Study Abroad Program.

On September 26, 1997 David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University, and Chong-Kuk Son, Chancellor of Kyonggi University, signed an inter-institutional agreement that enables 20 Korean students to study in America beginning this January 1998.

At the ceremony, the C.W. Post Chorus performed the National Anthem meticulously in Korean as well as American, to meet their audience more than half way. The choral group recently returned from a triumphant 14-day tour of Korea where they performed a series of concerts in universities, business settings, in Seoul's leading concert auditorium, and a church with an audience of 20,000.

The program, run through the School of Continuing Studies at Long Island University, will give the students a chance to study English as a Second Language which includes English conversation, writing and reading, and American history and culture. Students will also audit undergraduate ceramic and art classes to familiarize them with American classroom procedures. Classes will be offered at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus in Brookville.

"Students will experience life in the residence halls at C.W. Post and will become part of the campus community through the many recreational activities and services available," said Dr. Nishan Najarian, Dean of Continuing Studies for Long Island University.

Long Island University is well-known for its strong Asian outreach programs. The C.W. Post Campus is home to the Korea Center which helps Korean students assimilate to American lifestyles. At Long Island University's Southampton College, the Preparation for an American University Program facilitates the college application process for foreign students. At Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus, the Korean Student Association promotes friendship and pride among members through cultural, athletic and intellectual activities.
