Survey Shows Nearly 100% Employment Rate
for Palmer School Graduates

 

The Palmer School of Library and Information Science at Long Island University recently conducted a survey on salary and job placements for its 1996 master's degree graduates.

The findings revealed that the average starting salary for the 1996 graduates who earned degrees in library science is $32,665, and ranges from $23,000 to $50,000 per year.

Graduates landed jobs in the following sectors:

  • Public Libraries -- 42.5%
  • School Media Centers -- 19.2%
  • Academic Libraries -- 12.8%
  • Special Libraries -- 14.9%
  • Other (information industry) -- 10.6 %

Forty out of the 44 graduates are based in New York (90%), with one each of the remaining four in the following states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Texas.

All graduates found permanent, professional library positions, with the exception of two who are employed in another field and one who is not employed but is currently seeking a position. Of those employed in professional positions, employment prior to or immediately after graduation, with the remaining 38% employed within an average of 3.7 months.

The Palmer School offers an innovative M.S. program that integrates information and library science and is accredited by the American Library Association. This master's degree in library and information science is available at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus in Brookville, New York, and in Manhattan at New York University's Bobst Library. The School also offers a B.S. in Information Transfer, a Ph.D. in Information Studies and certificate programs in archives and records management. Selected master's degree and certificate courses are offered at Long Island University's Westchester campus.
