C.W. Post Opens Long Island's First Logistics
Management Institute
The College of Management at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University
in Brookville recently opened Long Island's first Logistics Management Institute
(LMI) to provide the business and educational communities with comprehensive
logistics information and guidance. Logistics is the study of the supervision
of the distribution of goods - or getting your product to the right place
at the right time. It involves, among other functions, supply chain management,
forecasting demand, inventory control, purchasing, pricing, and costing.
The LMI is the result of a joint effort between C.W. Post and corporate
sponsors to provide customized services and training for businesses as well
as advanced research opportunities for businesses, faculty and students.
The LMI assists companies, industries and not-for-profit organizations in
keeping abreast of new technologies that can keep their products moving
smoothly.
Gregory M. Kellar, director of the LMI, said, "Logistics is an expanding
field that covers not just the traditional warehousing and transportation
concerns of businesses but also the areas of production management and human
resources." Dr. Kellar holds a Ph.D. in the field of logistics from
the University of Tennessee and has a vast background in statistical models
and applications of logistics in numerous corporate arenas. Through the
LMI, Dr. Kellar and other faculty from the College of Management will bring
cutting-edge theoretical and technical know-how to local and national businesses
to assist them in finding solutions to their business challenges.
Students of the College of Management will have opportunities to work
with LMI staff as they serve the business community. "These students
will gain invaluable real-world experience to help them meet the challenges
of the 21st century," said Dr. Kellar, who added, "Advances need
to be made not only in current logistics theories and practices, but in
logistics education as well if we are to truly assist and further the development
of the business world."
The Logistics Management Institute is located in room 303 Roth Hall,
C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, Northern Blvd. (Route 25A),
Brookville. For more information call the LMI at (516) 299-3914 or e-mail
