Tilles Center Offers Scholarships for
C.W. Post Pre-College Music Program
More than 60 talented young Long Islanders have been assisted in their
music studies since the inception of the Tilles Scholars program in 1992.
This January, Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and the C.W. Post Music
Department will once again offer local music students in grades 7 to 12
the opportunity to garner scholarships to participate in Long Island's only
Pre-College Music Program.
The Pre-College Music Program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island
University is designed to assist students seeking to refine and challenge
their musical abilities or to begin playing an instrument. The program of
study includes private instrumental instruction, theory class, chamber music
class, jazz workshop, voice performance workshop and playing in the C.W.
Post Orchestra.
Preliminary auditions for potential Tilles Scholars and the Pre-College
Music Program will be held in the Music Building on Saturday, January 17
from 10 a.m. to noon, and in the Fine Arts Center on Tuesday, January 20
from 5 to 7 p.m. For the C.W. Post Orchestra only, auditions will be held
on Monday, January 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Music Building. If the student
is unable to attend these dates, a special appointment can be arranged by
contacting the director, Maureen Hynes. All audition appointments can be
made by calling (516) 299-2236.
These auditions will serve as a preliminary screening for Tilles Center
scholarships, which are awarded after a second competitive audition. For
further information or to make a special appointment, please call Maureen
Hynes, director of the Pre-College Music Program, at (516) 299-2474 or 299-2948.
Tilles Center scholarships are awarded to young musicians to encourage
musical studies and to make professional performances accessible. Tilles
Scholars are awarded tuition assistance for one semester of study in the
C.W. Post Pre-College Music Program. Theory/composition students are also
eligible for Tilles Center's Gould Scholar Award. The scholarship awards
also include free admission to a wide range of professional performances
at Tilles Center relating to the student's area of study. The upcoming
scholarships are for the spring semester.
The Tilles Scholars program, an important component of education and
outreach at Tilles Center, is funded in part by "Swing for Kids"
an annual golf and tennis tournament chaired by Peter Tilles of the Tilles
Investments Company.
The Pre-College Music Program, which is now in its sixth year, offers
students several key advantages, including classes held in a college atmosphere,
opportunities to earn college credit, access to all campus facilities, including
Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, and the opportunity to work with
a faculty of performing artists from the C.W. Post Music Department.
Classes are offered each fall (September - January) and spring (February
- May) semester. Classes meet once a week for 12 weeks, in the late afternoons,
evenings and weekends. Students must complete an application for admission
and have a placement audition.
