Noted Clinical Psychologist to Give
Mid-Year Graduation Address at C.W. Post
Dr. Albert Ellis, one of North America's most influential psychotherapists
and founder of the Institute for Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy in New
York City - which has trained more than 12,000 therapists in the past 20
years - will be the commencement speaker at mid-year graduation exercises
on Sunday, February 1 at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
"The creator of the predominant model for modern-day psychotherapy,
Dr. Ellis' theories have been mainstays in the training of mental health
professionals around the world," said Dr. Joseph Shenker, Provost of
the C.W. Post Campus, who will preside over the graduation ceremony. Author
of dozens of books, including numerous self-help books dealing with sexuality,
marriage and family problems, the iconoclastic Dr. Ellis broke with Freudian
theory in the 1950s and helped usher in a movement toward more humanistic,
cognitive therapy.
At the core of his teachings, Dr. Ellis sees three distinct aspects to
the world around us. The first is what really happens. Second is what we
perceive about what really happens. And, third is how we react to it. Dr.
Ellis has devoted his career to helping people deal with the second aspect
and learn new ways to handle the third. He believes healthy people can avoid
depression and anxiety by learning how to overcome some of their negative
beliefs and how to accept the world for what it is.
Dr. Ellis is a native of Pittsburgh, holds degrees from City College
and Columbia University, and has devoted 50 years of his life to psychotherapy,
both as a therapist and as an educator. He has served on the faculties of
Rutgers University, NYU and Pittsburg State University (Kansas). Dr. Ellis
recently was honored by the Association for the Advancement of Behavioral
Therapy for his contributions to the field and has been recognized by many
professional organizations.
Graduation ceremonies begin at 10:30 a.m. in Tilles Center for the Performing
Arts on the C.W. Post Campus in Brookville, New York. More than 300 students
