U.S. Customs Named NYSCEA Employer of the
Year
The United States Customs Service, a major participant in the Cooperative
Education Program at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, has
been named Employer of the Year for 1996-97 by the New York State Cooperative
Education Association.
The United States Customs Service examines the personal baggage of international
travelers and facilitates passenger entry into the United States; provides
advice, protection and control of merchandise shipped into the country;
and monitors the nation's perimeters to thwart attempts and illicit entry
of merchandise, including illegal narcotics and drugs.
The U.S. Customs Service and the C.W. Post Cooperative Education Program
have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship for almost ten years. During
that time, U.S. Customs has employed C.W. Post students with such diverse
majors as political science, history, criminal justice, economics, finance,
and business management. "U.S. Customs has been a dedicated partner
to the Cooperative Education Program at C.W. Post, helping to provide quality
experiental learning opportunities for students," said Jeanette Grill,
director of the Professional Experience and Placement Office at C.W. Post.
The U.S. Customs Co-op experience not only includes quality work experiences,
but also training, in-service opportunities, and mentoring. "U.S. Customs
continually converts Co-op students to full-time employees after graduation,"
said Grill. Cooperative Education is a program that provides paid professional
work experience to college students, helping them to build a resume, try
different careers and earn money to help pay for college.
