C.W. Post Alumnus Dedicates Building Lobby to Favorite
Professor
More than 36 years ago, C.W. Post Accounting Professor Charles H. Zwicker
taught a young man named Stanley F. Barshay all about the basics of accounting.
Upon graduation, Zwicker got Barshay his first job, jump-started his accounting
career, and sent him on his way.
Now, almost four decades later, a successful Stanley Barshay was reunited
with Charles Zwicker at the dedication of the newly renovated accounting
building at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville,
New York. It was then that Barshay - a senior vice president for one
of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies - announced his pledge
to dedicate the lobby of the building in honor of his beloved and admired
mentor and professor, Charles Zwicker.
"I was totally floored," Zwicker said. "I hadn't seen
Stan in thirty-five years, and I was taken completely by surprise."
The Charles H. Zwicker Lobby is located in Lorber Hall, headquarters
of C.W. Post's School of Professional Accountancy. It was dedicated at
a ceremony on December 4, 1997.
"Charlie is a wonderful role model and friend, a professor who
devoted himself to the school," said Barshay, a resident of Old Westbury,
NY, who recently retired from a 33-year career with American Home Products
Corporation, a major pharmaceutical company with sales of over 14 billion
dollars. "He never accepted mediocrity, only maximum commitment."
Although Zwicker helped Barshay land his first job after college nearly
38 years ago, the two lost touch, each becoming successful in his chosen
field.
Barshay, a Long Island University trustee and 1960 graduate of the C.W.
Post Campus, landed a job in 1964 with American Home Products, makers of
Advil, Robitussin, Dristan and Chap Stick. He worked his way up in the
company to become president of the Boyle-Midway Division, president of
the Whitehall- Robins Health Care, and eventually senior vice president
of American Home Products. In 1987, he was the recipient of the C.W. Post
Distinguished Alumni Award.
Zwicker built from scratch the C.W. Post School of Professional Accountancy,
founded the C.W. Post Tax Institute, and taught at several noted universities,
including Teikyo Post University in Connecticut and National University
in California. Zwicker, who earned the distinction of Professor Emeritus
from C.W. Post in 1980, is a resident of Southbury, Connecticut.
Zwicker is currently serving as co-chair of the Lorber Hall Campaign
Steering Committee. The newly renovated lobby dedicated in Zwicker's honor
is part of a three-year, $1.7 million restoration of Lorber Hall. The building
is a magnificent historic mansion that was once the home of William E.
Hutton, brother of famed financier E.F. Hutton. The Committee is seeking
additional donations. For more information call Dr. Rosalie M. Simari,
