C.W. Post Graduate Triumphs Over Adversity
April Stanton of Jamaica, Queens, is a story of triumph over adversity.
She has overcome numerous obstacles, including a bout with cancer, and
two bicycle accidents, but will graduate from the C.W. Post Campus of Long
Island University with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She will be among
the 1,100 to graduate from C.W. Post on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, 1998.
"She never ceases to amaze me," says her mother, Alison Stanton.
"She gets up early and rides her bike all the way from Queens Village
to C.W. Post in Brookville. She was hit by a car two times while riding
to work, and even though she was hurt, she still continued to go to work
and school. She often doesn't get home from work until 1 a.m., and still
she gets up for school in the morning."
Growing up in a bustling section of New York City with her single mother,
April had the added responsibility of caring for her younger sister. Despite
many difficulties at home, April managed to keep up her grades at Van Buren
High School, and excelled on the school's track team, taking home various
awards and medals for her athletic abilities.
In 1994, April received a scholarship to C.W. Post, where she joined
the college track team, running 400, 800, and 1500 meter and cross-country
events. Yet before her 21st birthday, April learned she had cancer. She
underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and is doing well.
"Sometimes I'm amazed that I am here right now, but I am excited
to be graduating," said April. "I just could never imagine myself
giving up."
