Long Island University to Open New Okinawa Center Inauguration Set for May 5

In an effort to mesh the cultural and educational triumphs of the United States and Okinawa, Japan, representatives from the two countries will convene on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University on Tuesday, May 5 to celebrate the inauguration of the Long Island University Okinawa Center.

Installation of the board of directors and a preliminary opening of the center will be held at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Administration Building on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York.

The Long Island University Okinawa Center will offer educational, cultural and scholarship programs, documentation of Okinawa/United States history, and exchange programs for students, professors and researchers. Members of the Board of Directors include Hon. Masahida Ota, governor of the Okinawa Prefecture and honorary president of the Center; and Dr. David J. Steinberg, president of Long Island University and honorary co-president. The center is located in Room 2W16 of Post Hall on the C.W. Post Campus.

Okinawa, Japan's southwesternmost prefecture, is composed of more than 160 islands and islets that are scattered over a wide area spanning 620 miles from east to west. As the only Japanese prefecture with a subtropical, oceanic climate, Okinawa is famous for its blue seas and white sandy beaches which attract 3.5 million tourists every year. There is a heavy concentration of U.S. military bases on Okinawa, many of which were established during World War II.

The first public event of the new center will take place in Hillwood Recital Hall on the C.W. Post Campus on Saturday, August 22. At that time, the new Long Island University Okinawa Center and the 15th Anniversary of the Okinawa Association of New York will be jointly celebrated with a ceremony and performances by distinguished Okinawan musicians, dancers and entertainers.
