Active Members of Hispanic Community Receive C.W. Post Distinguished Alumni Award

A professional in Governmental Affairs for AT&T and the founder of Captree Chemical Corporation will be honored with Distinguished Alumni Awards at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 10.

Distinguished Alumni Awards are presented to C.W. Post graduates who have achieved professional success and who serve as role models to students. This year's recipients include Rita DiMartino, who graduated in 1977 with a master's degree in public administration, and Ernest P. Gonzalez, Jr. who earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1961.

Rita DiMartino, resident of Staten Island, is Director of Federal and International Government Affairs for AT&T and is an esteemed member and spokesperson for the Hispanic community. She is a nationally recognized expert on Hispanic affairs and in 1982, President Ronald Reagan appointed her Ambassador to the UNICEF Executive Board. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she earned her bachelor's degree at the College of Staten Island and attended Business Leadership Training Programs at Harvard Business School.

C.W. Post alumnus Ernest P. Gonzalez, Jr. came to the United States in 1955 from Panama as a teenager. While living with relatives in Brentwood, he studied at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and in 1961 realized his dream of earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry.

Today the West Islip resident is president and chief executive officer of Captree Chemical Corporation, a wholesale distributor of specialty chemicals with offices in New York, Virginia and Puerto Rico. Gonzalez is president of the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and vice chairman of the National Minority Business Council.

Dr. Joseph Shenker, provost of the C.W. Post Campus, will present the Distinguished Alumni Awards at the 41st annual commencement ceremonies which begin at 9:40 a.m. on the Great Lawn.
