New Long Island Center for Ethics Opens
Advances in medicine, technology, science and the economy produce drastic
changes in today's society. These changes raise pressing ethical questions
in almost every facet of daily life. To address these issues and illuminate
ethical dilemmas, the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville
has established The Long Island Center for Ethics.
An educational resource and interdisciplinary initiative, The Center
for Ethics will sponsor seminars and workshops on ethical issues in today's
society. Led by experts and scholars, the Center will become a forum where
Long Islanders - from students to corporate leaders - can tackle ethical
issues in a variety of arenas. Conferences and round table discussions,
led by C.W. Post faculty and representatives from the Long Island medical,
business, communication and education communities, will support public
awareness and understanding of ethical concerns and enhance moral sensibility.
"We are pleased to be able to provide Long Islanders with a forum
to discuss important ethical issues that affect every member of society,"
said Dr. Ellen M. McGee, director of the new Center. "People face
ethical issues nearly every day of their lives, whether they are students
writing term papers or therapists treating patients."
Dr. McGee, a resident of Brookville, NY, is a recognized expert on medical
ethics, including end-of-life care rights and enhancement technologies.
She has written on physician-assisted suicide, patient rights and technology
assessment, and was recently quoted in The New York Times and on
News 4 New York about the multiple birth phenomenon of the last decade.
The Center's first event, "Good Dying: Is It Possible?" will
feature prominent ethicists, pain specialists and legislative analysts.
The conference, to be held Thursday, November 5, 1998 from 8:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. in the Gold Coast Room at C.W. Post, is open to the public and
costs $20.
