Palmer School Grads Celebrate Near Perfect Employment
Record
For the third year in a row, graduates of the Palmer School of Library
and Information Science at Long Island University are celebrating a near
perfect employment rate.
According to Dr. Anne Woodsworth, dean of the Palmer School, a recent
survey revealed that the average starting salary for the 1997 graduates
who earned degrees in library science is $33,035 with 96% of those graduating
finding professional library positions within six months. Graduates landed
jobs in the following sectors:
Public Libraries -- 34.4%
School Media Centers -- 38.8%
Academic Libraries -- 10.5%
Special Libraries -- 9.0%
Other (Information Industry) -- 7.3%
Most graduates (90%) are based in New York, with the remaining graduates
employed in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
All graduates found permanent, professional library positions, with
the exception of two who are employed in another field and two who are
not employed but are seeking positions. Of those employed in professional
positions, employment prior to or immediately after graduation, with the
remaining 28.4% employed within an average of 2.9 months.
The Palmer School offers an innovative M.S. program that integrates
information and library science and is accredited by the American Library
Association. The School also offers a B.S. in Information Transfer, a Ph.D.
in Information Studies and certificate program in archives and records
management. The master's degree is also offered in Manhattan at NYU's Bobst
Library. Selected master's degree and certificate courses are offered in
Westchester.
